“Take My Hand, Please” – The Naked Lady Who Stood on Her Head
Dr. Small describes this unusual case from his book, “The Other Side of the Couch” (“The Naked Lady Who Stood on Her Head” in hard back). The patient had Body Dysmorphic Disorder, which describes people who seek body modification to rectify some perceived physical imperfection. The condition has some similarities with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, and patients often suffer from both illnesses simultaneously. Sometimes these people appear to be addicted to plastic surgery and the results can be irreversibly grotesque.
